PSHE

At Portway Junior School, PSHE is at the core of our whole-school approach and enables our children to not only become ‘lifelong learners’, but will help them learn for life as independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society. We aim to develop the “whole child” intellectually, morally and socially. PSHE is taught across the school from Year 3 - Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school. Our curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on positive relationships, communicating, emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health – all promoted through our ‘Portway 5’ values. With an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them (including online) and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the koinonia within school and the wider community. Woven through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core culture of ‘being kind’.

Our PSHE scheme is called Life Lessons, which will be used across all PSHE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) lessons in school. Life Lessons is described as “A fully inclusive, whole-school, youth-led PSHE & RSHE curriculum for UK schools that keeps pace with the world. Lessons build critical thinking, emotional literacy, and communication — helping pupils feel positive about their futures.” The programme is regularly reviewed and kept fully up to date in line with any guidance changes from the DfE. Curriculum overviews are available on our school website so that parents can see when key themes will be covered, including puberty and sex education. If you have any further questions or would like to view any of the lesson materials, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
